Meditation

Pride slowly, subtly, and quite surely endears us to ourselves. Often, the longer those close to us know us, the less remarkable or impressive we seem. Ironically, the opposite often rises in our own eyes. We can be prone to coddle and spoil our self-image.

In the book of Proverbs, Solomon, a wise king, advises his son to have complete trust in the Lord. In one verse, Solomon advises against relying solely on one's own understanding and instead urges trust in God. He also warns against the danger of thinking highly of oneself and disregarding the Lord's wisdom.

When someone is "wise in their own eyes," it means they believe their understanding is superior. They think they have everything figured out and do not listen to others' advice. They often live by the motto "my way or the highway." Being wise in one's own eyes means being self-reliant and self-sufficient, rejecting even God's assistance. This attitude is rooted in pride, which the Bible warns leads to destruction (Proverbs 16:18). Eventually, those who are prideful and wise in their own eyes will experience ruin or face God's judgment. The Bible even refers to such individuals as fools (Proverbs 12:15; Romans 1:22), providing a significant reason to avoid being wise in one's own eyes.

When we refuse to be wise in our own eyes, celebrating the grace we see in others, admitting how little we still know, and boasting all the more in our weaknesses, God gets his glory — and we see someone far more satisfying than what we loved in the mirror.
