Meditation

In Proverbs 23:23, the "cost of truth" refers to the investment of time, effort, and sometimes personal sacrifice needed to obtain and uphold truth in one's life. "Buying" truth means prioritizing it over less important matters. By stressing the importance of not "selling" truth, the proverb implies that its benefits far outweigh any costs or sacrifices involved.

The price of truth can be pretty high, as it might mean losing friends, allies, coworkers, or even your reputation. However, the repercussions of lies or neglecting to confront them are substantially worse. Since both are expensive, it is crucial to evaluate the return on investment. Both truth and lies have a compounding effect on our lives. Lies just lead to more dishonesty, while truth helps us grow in knowledge, understanding, and wisdom. Truth, instruction, insight, and wisdom are interrelated, each contributing to personal growth and development.

Here is how truth, learning, insight, and wisdom build on one another.

  1. Truth: This is the precise depiction or understanding of reality, facts, or principles. Recognizing and accepting the truth is the initial step in acquiring knowledge and comprehension.

  2. Instruction: Building upon a foundation of truth, one can learn through education, guidance, or experience. By adhering to instruction rooted in truth, an individual amasses accurate and pertinent information.

  3. Insight: As one's knowledge expands through instruction, they develop insight, the ability to discern patterns, connections, or more profound meanings in the amassed information. This is the "eureka" moment when an individual suddenly grasps a concept on a deeper level or from a fresh perspective.

  4. Wisdom: Wisdom represents the culmination of truth, instruction, and insight. It entails the practical application of knowledge and understanding in everyday life, enabling sound decision-making, navigating intricate situations, and offering valuable guidance to others.

In the end, the truth can be tough and require some sacrifices, but it leads to learning, insight, and wisdom. Lies create a harmful cycle of dishonesty, while truth helps us grow and develop. It's important to put truth first in our lives, even when it's hard or demands sacrifices, because the rewards are worth it.
