Proverbs 9:7 outlines the challenges faced by individuals who try to correct those unwilling to accept guidance or correction. A wise person has the discernment of knowing if a person is open to receiving wisdom or if they are not. A wise person doesn't waste their time sharing wisdom with those who will be insulted by it. This proverb says those kinds of people actually insult and attack in return. The wise person saves their breath.

The 'mocker' referenced in this verse typically represents individuals who are dismissive, scornful, or who lack respect, particularly towards principles of wisdom and righteousness. These individuals often hold an obstinate attitude that resists change or improvement. The term 'wicked,' meanwhile, signifies those who perpetually indulge in evil actions, ignoring the principles of righteousness and moral integrity.

The essence of the verse is that the act of attempting to instill wisdom or correct behavior in these individuals may result in backlash or retaliation. This retaliation may come in the form of verbal abuse or insults, reflecting the resistant attitudes of those being rebuked.

However, this verse is not to be taken as discouragement from helping others improve or guiding them towards righteousness. Rather, it serves as a caution, an advisory note on the potential difficulties that might be encountered in the process. It underscores the need for discernment, wisdom, and patience when dealing with such individuals.
