Good Morning πŸ™

This is Proverb Pic, the daily devo newsletter that helps Christians become wiser in 2 minutes a day.

Proverb of the day

Give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, β€˜Who is the Lord?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God."

Proverb 30:8-9

Meditation

In today's fast-paced world, we often get caught up in the race for wealth or material success. But Proverbs 30:8-9 encourages us to take a step back and focus on what really matters: finding balance, grace, and humility in our lives.

Agur, who wrote this proverb, shares a prayer that's super relatable for anyone trying to live with integrity. He asks God to help him avoid lies and deceit, which is something we can all connect with as we aim to be truthful and honest. Agur also doesn't want to be rich or poor, but just have enough to get by, which shows that he's looking for balance and wants to rely on God.

This passage reminds us of the dangers of having too much or too little. When we have a lot of money, we might forget about God and start thinking we don't need Him. On the other hand, if we're struggling financially, we might be tempted to do dishonest things, which doesn't honor God at all. So whether you are in need or wealthy, we have the opportunity to trust God.

Proverbs 30:8-9 is like a wake-up call for us to find balance in our lives and trust that God will provide for our needs. John D Rockefeller has a famous story after being named the wealthiest guy in the United States in his time, where he was asked, how much money is enough money? He said β€œone dollar more.” Those of us in Christ will have some thing that he will never have - enough. Having enough is knowing that God has provided for our every need and will continue to provide.

The gospel is: you're more sinful than you ever dared believe; you're more loved than you ever dared hope. The "more sinful" keeps you from feeling superior to rich people; the "more loved" keeps you from feeling inferior to rich people. Therefore, the gospel puts you in a place where you don't care about money anymore. You are free because Jesus is your treasure.

Prayer

Lord, help us to stay away from lies and always be honest with You and others. Show us how to find balance in our lives, so we don't get too caught up in money or material things. Teach us to be humble and to rely on You for what we need each day.
