Proverb of the day

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Meditation

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom because it builds in us what is needed for wisdom to grow. Wisdom grows in a person that sees reality as it is. For most of us, our egos prevent us from seeing reality as it is. Pride and arrogance are the weeds that prevent wisdom from growing. It correctly positions us in light of an all-powerful God. When we think about the fear of the Lord, that might make us uncomfortable. It's easier to say God is love. God is both. The more we realize the power of God, the more we are amazed that we get the love of God. We know that he did not use his power to give us what we deserve, but it gave us grace. The fear of God humbles us. We listen more, admit we don't know everything, and the fear kills our ego. The fear of the lord is the beginning of wisdom, but the love of the Lord is the end of wisdom.

Because wisdom comes not through the acquisition of knowledge but through experience and reflection, it can take years to produce. What happens, then, if suddenly you come to a crisis that demands great discernment and self-control? If you haven’t learned the hard-won habits of wisdom—of resting in Christ when other comforts are removed, of discerning choices among the bad, the good, and the best—you cannot suddenly develop them overnight, any more than you can get ready for the Olympics overnight. In a crisis, you will long for wisdom, but it will not answer. There are points of no return; when the storm is upon us, it is too late to seek shelter. Moments of decision pass and are gone forever. Only if we learn grace and wisdom in smaller daily disappointments will we be ready for the great ones.

Prayer

Lord, help me to see who you are more and more every day. Help me to see your size, grandeur and glory. Help me to stand in awe of you. Then, let that help give me perspective on myself. Let who you are humble me and make me brave because you love me. Amen

Application question

How can you learn grace and wisdom in the smaller daily disappointments so we are ready for the storm?
