Meditation

Proverbs 22:13 paints a vivid picture of the lengths to which a sluggard might go to justify inaction: “There’s a lion outside! I’ll be killed in the public square!” This ancient piece of wisdom, though rooted in metaphor, resonates even in our modern world. At its core, the proverb speaks of the human tendency to procrastinate, to find any and every reason to avoid challenges or work.

The image of a lion in the streets is deliberately exaggerated, serving as a reminder of the absurd excuses people invent to remain in their comfort zones. This kind of evasion is something many are familiar with. Whether it’s the student delaying their studies, blaming an unfavorable environment, or the professional avoiding a tough task, attributing it to insurmountable external challenges, the underlying theme is the same: procrastination.

Progress, on the other hand, demands confronting these self-imposed barriers. Every invented lion in the street is an opportunity in disguise—a chance to face the challenge, to grow, and to move forward. Overcoming such barriers not only aids in the completion of the task at hand but also builds resilience and character.

In the age of constant distractions and easy excuses, choosing progress over procrastination is the key to personal and professional growth. By recognizing our own “lions” and challenging their legitimacy, we make a conscious decision to prioritize progress over stagnation, action over inaction, and growth over comfort.
