Proverb of the day
There are those who curse their fathers and do not bless their mothers. There are those who are clean in their own eyes but are not washed of their filth.

Meditation
The call for children of all ages is to demonstrate honor and respect towards their parents, just because they are your parents. Proverbs 30:11-12 warns against the perils of disrespect, as it says, "There is a generation that curses its father and does not bless its mother. There is a generation that is pure in its own eyes yet is not washed from its filthiness." This proverb echoes Matthew 7 which says βWhy do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brotherβs eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?β
Are parents perfect, no. But there is wisdom here about honoring them and personal responsibility. Itβs much easier to see our parentβs faults and not look at our own. When we do look at our own faults, we still blame our parents for those faults. At what point will we stop playing the blame game and take responsibility for ourselves? Our parents may have hurt us but at some point healing is your responsibility.
How can children establish a healthy relationship with their parents? The key lies in honoring and respecting one's father and mother, as stated in Exodus 20:12. This commandment doesn't ask for love or admiration, as some parents may not be ideal role models. It also doesn't require obedience, because some parent may ask their children to do things that are not obedient to the Lord, and as individuals should eventually mature and become independent from their parents' guidance (Matthew 19:5; cf. Galatians 3:23β25).
Pay tribute to your parents during holidays, gatherings, phone calls, and even on social media. Acknowledge their contributions to your life by saying, "I learned that from you." Allow them the opportunity to change and grow, avoiding stereotypes. Practice forgiveness for their past mistakes and shortcomings.
Honoring your parents not only recognizes the sacrifices they may have made for you, often unseen, but also sets an example for younger generations on how they should treat you in your later years. Reflecting on the passage above, ask yourself if you have genuinely honored your parents.
Prayer
God, please help us to honor and respect my parents. They may not be perfect but they have given me the gift of life according to your plan.
