Meditation

The human inclination toward self-centeredness is nothing new. The age-old battle between pride and humility is one that rages in every heart. In Proverbs 6:16-19, sheds light on this by listing seven things that are detestable to the Lord. At the top of that list? "Haughty eyes." But why does pride, represented by haughty eyes, rank so high on this list of detestable things?

Pride, in essence, is the inflation of one's importance and the devaluation of others, including God. It places the individual at the center of their own universe. This self-focus disrupts the inherent balance in relationships, communities, and most crucially, one's relationship with the Divine. When consumed by pride, one perceives life through a distorted lens, often missing the bigger picture that life isn’t all about individual gains or importance.

The Bible’s repeated emphasis on humility is a remedy to this. Humility realigns our perspective, reminding us of our place in the grand tapestry of existence. It tells us, "It's not about you."

Tim Keller, a renowned pastor and author, has spoken and written extensively on various topics, including pride. One of his well-known quotes on the subject is:

"Pride is believing that you are the sole author of your own virtues and blessings."

This statement encapsulates Keller's view on pride as a form of self-deception, where individuals fail to recognize the role of God and others in their achievements and blessings. It underscores the importance of humility in acknowledging the contributions of external factors and grace in your life.
