Meditation

Proverbs 20:4 teaches us that in order to reach the season of harvest or success, you must plow in the right season. In other words in order to achieve success you have to put in the work. The fool in this proverb is lazy and does not work when it's time to work. Maybe they work but not at the right time. The fool doesn't realize the right time to do the right thing. So when it's time to harvest they are left regretting their choices. In contrast, the wise person works when it's time to work, and looks up and sees the harvest that their hard work has produced for them.

This "fool" may be lacking in foresight, not understanding the principle of sowing and reaping, which requires planning and discerning the right time to plant and the right time to harvest. They may neglect their duties during the time of plowing, only to realize their mistake when it's time to harvest, and they have nothing to reap. This can lead to regret and disappointment, as they are left without the fruits of labor that they failed to invest in the right time.

In contrast, the proverb champions the wise person who recognizes the importance of timing, hard work, and perseverance. They understand that they have to work in the season of plowing, to cultivate the ground and plant the seeds, to later enjoy the rewards in the season of harvest. The wise person does not shy away from exerting effort and time when it's required, and as a result, they look up at the end of the season and see a bountiful harvest.

Applying this proverb to our lives, it teaches us to be diligent, to prioritize our tasks, and to put in the necessary work at the right time to achieve our goals. It warns us against procrastination and laziness, which can lead to missed opportunities and regrets. It's a reminder that success isn't magically bestowed upon people but is the result of their sustained hard work, perseverance, and timely action. The right time to do the right thing is not to be missed, and if it is, one can only expect a barren field come harvest time.

Lord, help us to work when it's time to work and rest when it's time to rest. Help us to be wise to know the difference between the two and trust in you for the harvest.
