This proverb shows there are 2 types of friends. The first type of friend loves. But the second type of friend loves in times of adversity. What defines a true friend? A key characteristic is steadfastness, as a genuine friend offers love and support during good and challenging times. Unfortunately, many relationships are transactional, where people seek others for economic, social, or emotional gains. When someone loses their social value, they are often abandoned by their so-called friends, who were never truly friends in the first place.
A true friends stand by your side when you are at your lowest and have little to offer. They value you for who you are, not as a means to an end. Steadfastness also requires being accessible, even during inconvenient times. However, building strong friendships takes time, and time is a limited resource. Although it may seem possible to have numerous friends, high-quality friendships are rare, and one cannot maintain many of them. Therefore, it is essential to devote more time to the friends you already have.
This proverb emphasizes that a genuine friend consistently offers love and support, regardless of circumstances. The verse also suggests that during difficult times, a close friend can be like a sibling, providing unwavering companionship and assistance. In essence, Proverbs 17:17 highlights the importance of loyal and enduring friendships.
Jesus is the true picture of friendship. If we want to be a true friend, we must first know what a true friend is. A true friend is one who lays down his life for his friends. If we want true friends, be a true friend. Greater love has no one than this: that someone lay down his life for his friends. And yet, our confidence should never be in our ability to be a true friend, but in the friendship God has given us in Christ. Jesus says, βYou did not choose me, but I chose you.β Even when we feel all our friends have abandoned us, we still have Jesus
Prayer
