Meditation
This Proverb guides us by showing that if your appetite is never satisfied, then you are doing too much dreaming and talking like the sluggard and not enough taking action. In other words, dreaming creates starvation (A sluggardโs appetite is never filled), but doing brings satisfaction (but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied). Understanding how to satisfy your appetites is the key to understanding these verses.
The sluggard's approach to their appetite is passive. They may have desires or cravings, but they do not take the necessary steps to satisfy them. Their attitude is characterized by inaction, procrastination, or even a sense of entitlement. They might spend a lot of time dreaming about what they want or talking about their desires, but they do little to actually achieve them. Their approach is often rooted in wishful thinking rather than realistic planning or disciplined action. As a result, their appetites remain unsatisfied because they are not putting in the work necessary to fulfill them.
On the other hand, the diligent person's approach to their appetite is active and disciplined. They also have desires and ambitions, but they take the necessary steps to fulfill them. They understand that achieving their goals requires effort, planning, and perseverance. They are willing to work hard, overcome challenges, and make sacrifices if necessary. Their approach is characterized by proactive behavior and a focus on action rather than mere dreaming. As a result, they are often able to satisfy their appetites because they actively work towards their goals.
In essence, the key difference between the sluggard and the diligent person lies in their approach to their appetites: the sluggard is passive and wishes for their desires to be fulfilled, while the diligent person is active and works to fulfill their desires. This proverb teaches the value of diligence, suggesting that satisfaction comes not from mere wishing, but from concerted effort and disciplined action.
