Proverbs 6:25-27 cautions against indulging in desire for someone's physical beauty. While it is natural to acknowledge and admire someone's attractive appearance, it becomes problematic when the sole focus is on possessing their body. We often hear that a man consumed by lust "wants a woman," but as C. S. Lewis astutely observes, strictly speaking, he does not desire the woman herself. Rather, he seeks pleasure, considering the woman merely as a necessary instrument for that enjoyment.
Authentic love compels one to fully devote themselves to a specific individual, irrespective of gender. On the other hand, lust operates in the opposite manner, aiming to extract a gratifying and self-centered experience from the other person. According to biblical teachings, the purpose of sex is not merely for personal expression to attain happiness, but rather for selfless giving that fosters lasting unity and vitality, exemplifying Christ's self-sacrificial nature (Ephesians 5:22ff.). Engaging in sex without offering oneself completely is a grotesque aberration, akin to a headless body wandering aimlessly. Lust and engaging in sexual acts outside of marriage can be likened to sampling food without actually consuming and digesting it.
Prayer
Lord, help us to flee temptation. Help us redirect my desire for intimacy and beauty into communion with you, Lord Jesus. Amen
