🙏 Laziness is harder than hard work. Proverb 6:11-16

(2 min read) Proverb of the day visualized

Good Morning 🙏

This is Proverb Pic, the daily devo newsletter that helps Christians become wiser in 2 minutes a day.

Proverb of the day

6 Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! 7 It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, 8 yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. 9 How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? 10 A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest— 11 and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.

Proverb 6:6-11

Meditation

This proverb highlights the dangers of laziness. Laziness is living outside of our design. Similar to the ant we were created to work. It is at the core of being human. Even before God created Eve for Adam, Adam was given a job to do. Work provides purpose. Lazy people have inordinate cravings for ease, rest, and comfort. Ironically, lazy people live dissatisfied lives because they are not dissatisfied with their lives enough. Dorothy Sayers defines “laziness” as “the sin which believes in nothing, cares for nothing, seeks to know nothing, interferes with nothing, enjoys nothing, loves nothing, hates nothing, finds purpose in nothing, lives for nothing, and only remains alive because there is nothing it would die for.

When we think of a lazy person, we think of someone who doesn’t start things. But there is also a kind of person who is always making plans and always starting but never finishing any project. They don’t stay at jobs long, and they always blame the job itself rather than their own lack of stick-to-it-iveness. Either they lose interest because of a lack of inner passion for anything or they have failed to count the cost and so find themselves overwhelmed. Laziness can have many forms. Lazy people do not love life enough to work hard to enjoy more of it, and they don’t love people enough to work hard. In the end, laziness is harder than hard work itself. Hopping from job to job is harder than keeping a steady career. Chasing the next dollar is harder than saving. Rehab is harder than not doing drugs in the first place. Losing 50 pounds is harder than not gaining 50 pounds in the first place. The life that laziness produces is a pit that you cannot dig yourself out of. You don't have the work ethic to dig yourself out of that.

To remedy laziness, look to “Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God” (Hebrews 12:2). He endured crushing burdens with joy, because he loved us enough to save us.

Prayer

Lord, help us to start new things, see things through and work for your kingdom with joy.

Application question

What project have you not yet started? What project do you need to finish?
