Proverb of the day

My husband is not at home; he has gone on a long journey. He took his purse filled with money and will not be home till full moon.” With persuasive words she led him astray; she seduced him with her smooth talk. All at once he followed her like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer stepping into a noose till an arrow pierces his liver, like a bird darting into a snare, little knowing it will cost him his life.

Proverbs 7:21-23

Meditation

What would you do if no one found out? This proverb is all about the cheap price of temptation cost a lot more than you think. Here the woman says, "My husband is not at home... and will not be home till full moon" (7:19-20). Temptation becomes incredibly potent when you think, "No one will ever find out!" However, the truth is that there is always a steep price to pay (verse 23) for violating God's spiritual and moral principles. In the case of adultery, it could mean inward and outward shame or the financial and physical danger that comes from a wronged husband’s wrath (6:33–35). Most of all, God will always know.

Thomas Brooks, who wrote "Precious Remedies Against Satan's Devices" that Satan tempts you by falsely assuring you that repentance can always come later. However, the same tempter who now lures you into sin with the notion that repentance is easy will eventually drive you to despair, portray repentance as the most challenging and arduous task imaginable, and ultimately destroy your soul.

The adulterous woman convinces the man through persuasive words. She tells him that no one will find out And therefore the price for one night is cheap. But at the end of the day the proverb says that it will cost him his life. When we are tempted, we need to count the cost. Is one fleeting night worth your marriage and family? Is one fleeting night worth your reputation? Is one fleeting night worth the guilt and shame you have to carry with you the rest of your life?

To see the cost of our sin we must look at the cross. Even the sins we think are cheap cost Jesus his life. The price of sin is so immense that it required God's own sacrifice to heal it. How righteous must God be that Jesus had to perish to appease Him? God could have created and demolished countless worlds to exhibit His divine justice, but none would compare to the sacrifice of Jesus. When I count the cost, there's no question. It's not worth it.

Prayer

Lord, help us to see the true price if our sin.
