Meditation

The Book of Proverbs gives many warnings about anger. Here we have warnings for the person who is constantly enabling anger because they cannot handle the emotions of a hot-tempered person. Proverbs 19:19 teaches us that a hot-tempered person must face the consequences for their actions and warns against enabling their harmful behavior by constantly rescuing them.

There are several reasons you might enable anger, such as fear, lack of awareness, guilt, codependency, or low self-esteem. This enabling behavior can turn anger into an addiction to anger because it reinforces the angry person's belief that their behavior is justified and acceptable. It provides a temporary emotional release without addressing the underlying issues, creating a vicious cycle. This cycle is similar to enabling a person with a substance addiction, where the enabler prevents the addicted person from facing the consequences of their actions, prolonging the issue.

Breaking the cycle of anger addiction starts with recognizing and addressing the reasons for enabling behavior. The enabler must learn to set boundaries, prioritize their well-being, and understand that they cannot "fix" the angry person.

Allowing the angry person to face the consequences of their behavior can be a powerful catalyst for repentance. When they experience the negative impact of their actions on their relationships, career, and overall well-being, they may recognize the need for repentance and personal growth. This realization can motivate them to seek help, address their anger issues, and develop healthier coping mechanisms.

Proverbs teaches us that the wise person allows the angry person to experience the consequence of their anger so that it could lead to change. When we rescue people time and time again, we are standing in front of God doing his work. The hope of the Christian faith is dependent on God’s display of strength, not ours. God is in the business of destroying our idol of self-sufficiency in order to reveal himself as our sole sufficiency.

Prayer

Lord, Because Jesus paid it all, we are set free from the pressure of having to do it all. We are weak. He is strong.

Application question

Not all anger is wrong. What is God-centered anger versus self-centered anger?
