Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.

Meditation
This proverb is all about the importance of relying on God's trustworthy and unchanging word while cautioning against altering or misrepresenting it. We see warnings all throughout the bible where adding to Godβs word = subtracting from it.
We see one of these warning in the first chapter of Galatians, the apostle Paul urges his readers to demonstrate dedication, determination, and discernment when it comes to the gospel. He specifically warns that any alteration to the gospel, whether by adding or subtracting from it, will lead to condemnation. Paul himself emphasizes the need for scrutiny of his own message, highlighting his divine appointment for defending and proclaiming the gospel. Even heavenly angels are included in this call for discernment. In essence, it is crucial to grasp the essence of the gospel, hold firmly to it, and vigorously protect its purity, regardless of who delivers the message.
The issue in the Galatian church was not about reinventing Jesus or embracing a different deity but rather about introducing additional elements to the gospel. Consequently, Paul defends the gospel of justification by faith alone, emphasizing that nothing should be added or taken away. When people, irrespective of their intentions, introduce or remove elements from the gospel, they undermine God's purpose of bringing absolute glory to Jesus. By intermingling religious works with the work of the perfect Savior, they diminish the splendor of the cross, disrespecting and devaluing its flawless accomplishment.
The gospel serves as the primary means of exalting Jesus. Recognizing that its perfection cannot be surpassed, it becomes clear that, in terms of the gospel, addition is equivalent to subtraction. Therefore, in our endeavor to align ourselves with God and glorify Jesus, let us thoroughly understand the gospel, embrace it with love, and firmly hold onto it, demonstrating unwavering dedication. For it is through the gospel that God exalts Jesus.
